SLAM DUNK FOR LIFE is a series of summer basketball camps provided free of charge to at-risk boys and girls in the greater San Antonio area.
The camp is the brain-child of Dr. Eli Whitney a highly successful local cardiologist here in San Antonio and run by Camp Director Coach Jerry Tyson. The camp is entering its third year and has grown from 250 kids to over 1000 projected for 2004!

Dr. Tompkins was an all-city basketball player under Coach Jerry Tyson at Roosevelt High School from 1974-
77, and now serves on the Board of Directors for the camp.
Dr. Tompkins, along with the entire Board of Directors, is committed to insuring the camp’s continued success, which is highly dependent on finding continued financial resources to fund the camp.
SPONSOR A CAMPER is one such program. The Objectives of Sponsor A Camper are:
To help raise additional funds in support of the rising costs associated with running the camps.
To allow additional campers the opportunity to participate in coming years.
To help foster a ‘mentor’ approach between camper and sponsor while accomplishing objectives #1 and #2.
The cost of sponsoring a camper for the week-long summer camp is $200.
This cost includes:
Basketball attire consisting of camper t-shirt, shorts, and basketball shoes.
Instruction from top male and female high school basketball coaches within the greater San Antonio area (for a complete list visit the website at http://www.slamdunkforlife.org/html/coaches.htm.
Transportation to/from each camp within the individual school district(s).
Lunch provided every afternoon.
Inspirational presentations from selected dignitaries (previous speakers have included Avery Johnson, “Jessie” James Leija, Johnny Moore, Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil, Bob Lilly, and Jethro Pugh….among others!).
