Friends: SDFL Basketball Camps are a series of tuition free summer basketball camps
for at risk Greater San Antonio middle school students. The camps are specially
designed to not only teach the fundamentals of the sport, but more importantly,
to promote important life skills while learning about respect and cooperation
with authority and peers. The goal of the program is to reach out to pre-teen
and teenage boys and girls in the greater San Antonio area who are at-risk and/or
need additional reinforcement in successful life skills. As
the newly elected President of SDFL Board of Directors, I encourage you to help
us continue to play an integral role in the developmental years of these kids’ lives.
Our goal is to expand into every school district in San Antonio-possibly up to
10,000 campers a summer-even more! Our message is simple-stay in school (and out of trouble), get an education,
and learn respect for your peers and authority figures. By accomplishing this,
the opportunities for success in life are greatly increased. SDFL has grown from 250 participants in 2001(its inaugural year) to over 2000
projected for this summer (2005). The cost to supply each student with a pair
of shorts, a shirt, an official SDFL basketball, top-flight instruction from
local high school coaches, lunch each day, and transportation has grown substantially
each year. The cost for sponsoring a single student for a week at a camp is a $200. SDFL
is a non-profit (501C3) organization, and each benefactor will receive a receipt
for tax purposes. Please consider sponsoring a student this summer, or a group of students!
Or possibly become a co-sponsor with a friend, family member, colleague, or employer.
It is an investment for, and in, the future of our youth.
